Flash-Butrym Spółka Jawna is implementing a project co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under Sub-measure 1.1.1. Industrial research and development work carried out by enterprises, entitled "Development of innovative MapRE technology for uniform light distribution on 3D objects with a change in the direction of exposure." The project is implemented under the Smart Growth Operational Program as part of the NCBR Fast Track competition

The aim of the project is to develop and build a stage lighting lamp using MapRE technology, with a 4D moving head, and an innovative system for distributing and shaping the LED light beam, enabling, among other things, uniform distribution of lighting on 3D surfaces, with a change in the direction of exposure.

The result of developing the MapRE technology will be a lamp with a 4D moving head with an innovative system for distributing and shaping the LED light beam, enabling even distribution of lighting on a 3D surface, working with parameters enabling interference-free recording and television broadcasting.

Strobes - Archived products

Strobes (also called strobe lights or stroboscopic lamps) are lighting fixtures designed to produce rapid, intense flashes that can transform movement, perception, and energy in a space. In professional entertainment contexts, Strobes are used to add momentum and “impact moments” to live music, DJ performances, club nights, and large-scale productions, where timing and synchronization can substantially shape audience experience. Within Strobes events, the essential value of a strobe is not only brightness but control: the ability to set flash frequency, choose effect patterns (for example pulsing or random bursts), and integrate those behaviors into a broader lighting system.

Understanding the Stroboscopic Effect and Modern Fixture Types

The core visual principle behind Strobes is the stroboscopic effect: when a moving scene is illuminated in brief “samples” (flashes) rather than continuously, motion can appear slowed, frozen, or altered. This is the same perceptual mechanism behind familiar “wagon-wheel” illusions, where rotation can seem to pause or reverse when sampling is near the motion’s cycle rate.

A practical way to think about Strobes is as “time cutters” for light. Each flash is a very short exposure that can emphasize shapes, edges, and rhythm—creating a pulse-like visual vocabulary that continuous wash lighting cannot replicate.  This is why strobe effects remain a staple of Strobes events even when the overall lighting design is dominated by moving heads, LED walls, and lasers.
Modern Strobes in stage and event lighting are most commonly LED-based, but the wider strobe ecosystem historically includes xenon flash tubes as well. Xenon and LED approaches differ in maintenance and lifecycle characteristics; for example, one industry comparison notes that LED strobes have no bulbs to replace, while xenon strobe bulbs may be rated for a large but finite number of flashes, and LEDs can offer longer operating life depending on the model.  In today’s event fixtures, LEDs also enable features that are harder to implement with traditional flash tubes—such as multi-zone “pixel” control, color mixing, and hybrid strobe/wash behaviors.
A representative example of the “hybrid, system-ready” direction is a fixture that combines RGB sections with dedicated white strobe sections and zone control, enabling both wide wash coverage and tightly-defined strobe beams in the same chassis. One such specification describes a unit with separate RGB and white LED arrays, multiple controllable zones, and an adjustable strobe frequency range (with random and pulsating options), which is typical of how contemporary Strobes are engineered for flexible show design.

Strobes events: Creative Applications from Clubs to Festivals

In Strobes events, strobes are rarely a “constant-on” effect. Their strength is in punctuation: transitions, drops, chorus hits, DJ cuts, reveals, risers, and “finale” moments. This is consistent with how professional strobe categories are described for event use - emphasizing dynamic character and synchronization with music to intensify atmosphere at concerts, club events, and festivals.
A useful creative framework is to treat Strobes as a “contrast engine” inside your lighting system. The effect becomes most compelling when it contrasts with something else: a warm wash dropping into cold white strobes, continuous haze beams interrupted by sharp pulses, or slow movement that suddenly becomes “stop-motion.” This is why many event-focused strobe fixtures explicitly support multiple effect styles (pulse, random, variable frequency) rather than a single flash rate.
In practice, Strobes events often benefit from a layered approach:
  • A wide, softer strobe layer that “fills” the room (useful for club floors and audience zones).
  • A narrower, more intense layer for stage/camera impact.
  • Optional pixel-zone movement (left-to-right sweeps, segmented chases, or block pulses) when the fixture supports multiple controllable sections.
This is where zone-based fixtures become especially valuable. For example, one strobe product description highlights independent pixel control functions and multiple operating modes, while another specifies a high number of control sections (for instance, 24 RGB zones plus 12 white zones), creating the basis for “strobe chases” that read as motion even when the light itself is flashing.
Outdoor festival work introduces additional constraints that shape strobe creativity. Weather exposure, dust, and fast load-ins reward fixtures with rugged housings and higher ingress protection ratings (commonly IP65 in event lighting), so the design intent includes reliability under challenging conditions rather than only raw output.

Strobes Controls: DMX512, RDM, Art-Net, and Wireless DMX for Strobes events

High-quality Strobes events depend on control reliability as much as fixture brightness. In most professional contexts, Strobes are controlled using DMX512-class protocols, where the strobe’s intensity, flash rate, and effect macros are mapped to control channels. A DMX512A overview notes a maximum refresh rate of 44 updates per second for 512 channels, and also defines the terminator concept as a 120Ω resistor at the end of the data bus—details that matter when strobes must respond tightly to beats and cues.
At the physical layer, DMX512A is based on RS-485 differential signaling, and typical implementations reference long cable runs and multiple receivers—useful context when planning Strobes events across truss lines, stage wings, and FOH positions.
Remote Device Management (RDM) extends DMX behavior by enabling bidirectional communication for discovery and configuration. A published standard overview explains that RDM permits intelligent bidirectional communication between devices from multiple manufacturers over a modified DMX512 data link, enabling discovery, configuration, monitoring, and management of devices on a DMX512 network.  A concise industry definition similarly frames RDM as a protocol enhancement to DMX512 that allows two-way communication for configuration and status monitoring over a standard DMX line.  For Strobes events, RDM can reduce setup time by making addressing and diagnostics faster—especially in large rigs where physical access is limited once truss is flown.
When many universes are needed, Ethernet-based distribution is common. Art-Net is positioned (by its official project site) as a protocol that transports DMX512 and RDM lighting data over an Ethernet network.  In practical terms, this allows a lighting network to carry multiple DMX “universes” easily across a venue, with nodes near trusses converting network data back to DMX outputs.
Wireless DMX is increasingly important in Strobes events because it reduces cabling, speeds load-ins, and can simplify stage aesthetics. One wireless DMX technology provider describes CRMX as its patented technology for wireless DMX and positions it as a widely used standard in entertainment lighting.  Another wireless system brochure describes W-DMX as a “plug and play” system for transmitting DMX and RDM wirelessly and highlights interference-avoidance through adaptive frequency hopping techniques.
Some modern strobe fixtures are designed with this ecosystem in mind. As an example of a “system integration” feature set, one strobe/wash/effect fixture specification lists multiple protocols and modes—including DMX512 with multiple channel modes, Art-Net, RDM, and wireless DMX options—reflecting how contemporary Strobes are expected to slot into complex lighting infrastructures.
